Sebagai salah satu program pendukung MUSLIHAT OK. Video – 6th Jakarta International Video Festival yang berlangsung dari 4 – 15 September 2013, RURU Gallery mengundang dua komunitas yang kerap menggunakan teknologi media video, gambar bergerak, dan bunyi, sebagai alat ekspresi seninya: Jatiwangi Art Factory (Jatiwangi) dan Kinetik-WAFT (Surabaya). Kami mengundang kelompok ini karena aktivitas mereka yang berkaitan dengan tema besar OK. Video tahun ini: “MUSLIHAT”, yang mencoba melihat dan membaca praktik ‘mengakali’ teknologi dalam keseharian yang dilakukan oleh konsumen. Melalui tema, MUSLIHAT OK. Video mencoba untuk membaca persebaran, penggunaan dan pengembangan mandiri teknologi media video dan gambar bergerak di masyarakat.

Seperti kita ketahui, telah banyak organisasi-organisasi kemasyarakatan yang melakukan kegiatan pemberdayaan masyarakat dengan menggunakan perangkat teknologi komunikasi terkini seperti video dan film. Dua kelompok ini, yang berasal dari dua wilayah di Pulau Jawa, dengan kultur yang sangat berbeda juga menggunakan teknologi media video, gambar bergerak, dan bunyi, yang diaplikasikan ke dalam berbagai proyek seni seperti pertunjukan maupun pemberdayaan masyarakat. Mereka masing-masing memiliki cara-cara dan strategi artistik yang khas menyesuaikan dengan konteks geografis, latar politik, sosial, dan budayanya, sehingga mendorong cara-cara kreatif dalam mengeksplorasi teknologi media sebagai eksperimentasi artistik yang sesuai dengan karakter kota dan juga masyarakatnya.

Jatiwangi Art Factory (JAF) yang didirikan pada 2005 di Jatiwangi, Jawa Barat, selalu melibatkan warga setempat dalam setiap perhelatan ataupun proyek keseniannya. Keterlibatan warga yang dirintis hampir delapan tahun ini telah terlihat dampaknya, terutama jika melihat bagaimana tanggapan warga atas media informasi yang masuk atau tersedia di desanya. Dalam pameran ini, JAF akan mencoba menghadirkan fenomena terbaru dari penggunaan media bagi pembangunan desa yang tidak hanya dilakukan oleh warga mulai dari anak kecil, remaja, hingga dewasa, tetapi juga oleh aparatus desa seperti kepala desa dan camat.

Sementara KINETIK-WAFT yang berbasis di Surabaya, Jawa Timur, sejak awal terbentuknya banyak melakukan aktivitas seni dengan medium video dan eksperimentasi multimedia melalui pameran, workshop, performance dan festival yang berhubungan erat dengan kultur anak muda. Pada pameran ini, KINETIK-WAFT akan membuat sebuah karya baru berupa pendokumentasian praktek warga di sekitar mereka dalam “mengakali” teknologi untuk digunakan dalam keperluan sehari-hari.

Pada pameran ini RURU Gallery mengundang Alghorie (JAF) dan Benny Wicaksono (KINETIK-WAFT) untuk bertindak sebagai kurator pameran.

As one of the fringe programs of MUSLIHAT OK. Video – 6th Jakarta International Video Festival that takes place on 4-15 September, RURU Gallery has invited two artist initiatives that consistently using video technology, moving images, and sounds as instruments to convey their artistic expressions: Jatiwangi Art Factory (Jatiwangi) and KINETIK-WAFT (Surabaya). They artistic approach are considered closely related to the chosen theme of OK. Video festival this year, “MUSLIHAT” (DECEPTION), that attempt to observe and interpret the practices of ‘outsmarting’ technology in everyday life done by the consumers. Through this theme, MUSLIHAT OK. Video Festival sets out to map the distribution, consumption, and the independent development of video technology and moving images in society.

As we know by now, there have been plenty of public organizations that embark on public empowerment activities using the latest communication technologies such as video and film. The two groups, which are based in two different cities in Java that possess very different cultures from each other, equally employ video media technology, moving images, and sounds; which are then applied into various art projects, both performance as well as social empowerment. Each have their own distinctive artistic ways and strategies; adapted within their geographical, political background, social, and cultural context; thereby encouraging creative ways in the exploration of media technology as an artistic experimentation that is in accordance with the characteristics of a city and its residents.

Jatiwangi Art Factory (JAF), which was established in 2005 in Jatiwangi district of West Java, has always been successful in getting the local people involved in all the art events or projects they work on. This civic involvement that began since nearly eight years ago have been giving some visible impacts, particularly on how the people respond to incoming media of information that are available in their village. In this exhibition, JAF will try to present a new phenomenon of the use of media for rural development that is not only done by the village inhabitants; ranging from small children, teenagers, to adults; but also by the village apparatus, such as the chief of the village and the chair person of the district.

Concurrently, KINETIK-WAFT, that is based in Surabaya, East Java, has worked on a lot of artistic activities with the medium of video art and multimedia experimentation through exhibitions, workshops, performances and festivals that are closely associated with youth culture since the very beginning of their establishment. In this exhibition, KINETIK-WAFT will create a new work that documents the practices of the residents of Jatiwangi in “outsmarting” the technology used in everyday purposes.

For this exhibition, RURU Gallery invites Alghorie (JAF) and Benny Wicaksono (KINETIK-WAFT) to act as curators.
